Abstract

The present study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant status in iron deficient pregnant anemic women. Forty pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were divided into three groups, namely mild (18), moderate (14) and severe (8) anemic along with pregnanthealthy women as controls (20). The levels of haemoglobin, ferritin along with antioxidant Vitamin C and Vitamin E weresignificantly reduced in all IDA groups. On the basis of ourresults, it may be concluded that IDA tends to increase the prooxidant components, which may result in various complicationsincluding peroxidation of vital body molecules resulting in increased risk for pregnant women as well as fetus.
