Lipid profile pattern and dyslipidemia in obese and non obese libyan type 2 diabetic patients in benghazi city

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to comparison of lipid profile pattern and dyslipidemia in obese versus non obese Libyan type 2 diabetic patients in Benghazi city. Hospital based case study was selected from the Benghazi Diabetes Center and Benghazi Medical Center, Benghazi – Libya. A total of 350 patients (152 women and 198 men) were divided according to type 2 diabetes and obesity. Body mass index BMI, waist circumference WC and blood pressure were measured after conducting face to face interview for each participant. Blood sample was collected to measure fasting blood glucose, total cholesterol , LDL & HDL cholesterol and triglyceride. Most of the study patients had any type of dyslipidemia, with low HDL-cholesterol dyslipidemia being the most common type, and there was statistically sig-nificant difference in the proportions of patients with different BMI category and lipid ab-normalities. A significant increase in levels of serum cholesterol and serum LDL –C and a significant decrease HDL-C in obese diabetics subjects were observed. The study has docu-mented several lipid profile abnormalities and dyslipidemia among obese and non-obese type 2 diabetic patients. Since both dyslipidemia and obesity increase the risk for coronary artery diseases (CAD), so their proper control might reduce the incidence of CAD among diabetics. The study revealed that obesity and dyslipidemia were high among diabetic patients and re-quired special attention. This can be achieved through health education at the primary care level and in the diabetic clinics.
